Just Watched: Watchmen (spoiler alert)

I just watched Watchmen, and as much as I wanted to like it, I just couldn’t. I can understand being faithful to the source material (the original graphic novel) but the movie could have easily been 45 minutes shorter. Add to that the fact that there were only two truly likeable characters in the movie (Rorschach and The Comedian), one of which gets very little screen time, and you’re just watching a film about a bunch of people you don’t care for.

Seeing the Silk Spectre II in her skin-tight outfit was nice, for the ten seconds you actually get a good look at her, but why was I treated to Dr. Manhattan’s blue-man penis repeatedly?

Anyways, the scenes that didn’t include Rorschach or The Comedian were just boring. Night Owl II had the personality of a tree stump, and Silk Spectre II really didn’t do anything except kick a little bit of ass, then show some side boob. The villain looked and acted about as stereotypical as a comic book villian possibly could, and the climax was anti-climactic (and a bit too hard to believe). I can suspend disbelief quite a bit, and you have to with comic book movies, but there’s just something about world peace that I just can’t accept.

Overall the movie had some cool fight scenes, but they were too few and far between. It was a well-written movie, adapted from a well-written comic book, but it almost tried to be more than what it was. I’m not saying comic book movie can’t be well-written, but I don’t go into it expecting an Oscar-winning script. I wanna see some ass kicking, and there just wasn’t enough for my tastes.
